Is Pebble, which once left its mark on the smartwatch world, preparing to return? Eric Migicovsky, the founder of the company, announced that he wants to revitalise the device. Acquired by Google in 2016, Pebble became open source and PebbleOS could be integrated into all devices.
Pebble’s comeback is very close
Eric Migicovsky took the opportunity to open source PebbleOS through his newly founded company Core Devices. In a blog post, he announced that his team has managed to compile and run PebbleOS on real hardware.
Migicovsky also shared an image showing the operating system running on a test motherboard with a small, monochrome display. ‘It will be a Pebble almost like you remember, but now with open-source software that you can modify and improve,’ he said in a statement.
This statement shows that the new Pebble will maintain its simplicity and basic functionality instead of being equipped with complex features. The most important features that make the smartwatch stand out are its long battery life and the fact that it can be seen even in direct sunlight thanks to the e-ink display.
Migicovsky stated that the new hardware will focus on strengths rather than prioritising cutting-edge features. In this context, the founder said that he will go to China next week to determine the necessary components and meet with hardware suppliers.
