The gaming world has experienced many developments in 2023. While major companies have made significant strides, including the GTA 6 trailer, independent studios continue to struggle. Accordingly, independent publisher Versus Evil announced that it has ceased all operations.
Versus Evil ceases operations after 10 years
Versus Evil, which was founded in 2013 to provide independent game developers with an alternative to major publishers, laid off all its employees. In nearly 10 years, it has released popular productions such as The Banner Saga series, Pillars of Eternity, and Mothergunship.
In the official statement from the company, the closure was finally confirmed. In his farewell message, he thanked the players for their support. Versus Evil’s production manager, Lance James, announced that all employees were laid off.
Versus Evil was acquired by publisher TinyBuild in 2021. After the acquisition, it faced a legal dispute with TinyBuild over unfulfilled obligations. TinyBuild paid the publisher $3.5 million to resolve the problems.
The future of yet-to-be-released games such as Lil’ Guardsman and Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients is uncertain for now. The company, which announced the productions it plans to broadcast in 2024 a few months ago, may transfer the rights to a different publisher. Let us also remind you that developer studios can publish independently.
Among the highly anticipated games of the independent studio were productions of different genres such as Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients and Broken Roads. However, today’s financial conditions were not enough to keep the company afloat.
