Apple evaluating Baidu’s AI model for iOS 18

Due to its own AI technologies not being at a sufficient level, Apple is exploring partnerships with external technology providers. Apple aims to use AI to enhance features of the iPhone such as the language assistant, photo editing, and email composition.

However, due to regulations requiring apps in China to undergo regulatory approval, local AI models are governed by these directives. Over 40 generative AI models, including Baidu’s Ernie Bot, have been approved in China so far.

For markets outside China, Apple is planning to reach an agreement with Google on AI. Recent developments indicate that Apple is negotiating to license Google’s Gemini AI to integrate it into iOS 18.

Although Apple is known to be developing its own extensive language model named Ajax and a simple chatbot called Apple GPT, these products are not believed to be market-ready yet. Despite being the largest foreign market in China, Apple faces increasing competition with local rivals.

While the search for an AI model for iOS 18 continues, recent reports show a 24% drop in iPhone sales in China in the first six weeks of 2023. Huawei, subjected to US sanctions, saw a 64% increase in sales.
