Apple is testing the next-generation M3 Max chip. The new silicon chip will replace the M2 Max and will be used in the new MacBook Pro models next year. Users are eagerly anticipating how different the successor of the M2 Max will be. The Apple M3 Max comes with a powerful 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU.
The new king of silicon is coming: Apple M3 Max
Traces of the new chip were found in test logs by a third-party Mac developer. It appears to have a 40-core GPU, a 16-core CPU with 12 high-performance cores and four efficient cores. Its predecessor, the current M2 Max chip, features a 12-core CPU and a 38-core GPU.
The machine on which the chip is being tested has 48 GB of memory, but since the current MacBook Pro supports up to 96 GB of memory, there will likely be more upgrade options available. Apple is expected to build the M3 Max chip on a new 3-nanometer process, which is anticipated to result in speed and efficiency improvements compared to the M2 Max chip.
Apple is testing the chip in an unreleased high-end MacBook Pro codenamed “J514”. The M3 Max will be the top-tier chip in a trio that also includes the M3 and M3 Pro. It is expected to be one of the world’s best and most efficient laptop processors. While the M3 chip features an 8-core CPU and up to 10-core GPU, the M3 Pro will have a 12-core CPU and an 18-core GPU.
Apple is expected to release its first M3 Macs in October, but it will likely focus on machines using the standard M3 chip, such as the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M3 Max chip, on the other hand, are expected to be released in 2024.
