At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) today, Apple unveiled its new “Apple Intelligence” initiative, representing a major push by the tech giant into artificial intelligence.
Apple Intelligence features
Apple Intelligence will bring enhanced AI capabilities across Apple’s platforms, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and other devices. The features are aimed at automatically taking actions for users within apps through intelligent assistance.
Some key capabilities Apple outlined for Apple Intelligence include:
- Managing notifications proactively based on user contexts and patterns
- Automatically summarizing messages, emails and other texts
- Writing responses, notes or other materials on behalf of the user
- Connecting actions between apps, such as playing a suggested podcast after receiving a message
When cloud processing is required, Apple says it will use what it calls a “Private Cloud” where data will never be stored on servers and Apple claims it cannot access it. The company says independent experts will verify these privacy claims.
Apple Intelligence aims to bring more autonomous features to the user experience across the company’s operating systems and apps. It signals Apple’s renewed commitment to artificial intelligence and machine learning as it looks to maintain its position against rivals making big AI investments and announcements. The new capabilities will roll out to developers and consumers in software updates over the coming year.
