Apple officially announced today that advertisements will arrive in the Apple Maps app this summer. Alongside this development, the company introduced a brand-new feature that the app has arguably needed for years: Suggested Places. This new functionality is set to significantly transform the user mapping experience.

A New Era for Apple Maps: Ads and Suggested Places Arrive

According to the newly released press bulletin, starting this summer, businesses in the U.S. and Canada will be able to use the new Apple Business platform to create advertisements on Apple Maps. This will allow businesses to be discovered much more easily by potential customers on the map.

The in-app advertisements will appear at the top of search results based on relevance when users perform a search in Maps. Furthermore, these ads will also be placed at the top of the new Suggested Places experience. This system will provide various recommendations to users based on nearby trending venues, recent searches, and more.

To ensure transparency for Maps users, all displayed advertisements will be clearly labeled. Apple has not yet shared additional information regarding the background logic of the Suggested Places feature, which aims to make finding new spots easier. Similar real-time popularity features have been available on rival platforms for quite some time.

Apple’s latest move seems poised to take the competition in navigation apps to a different dimension. What do you think about advertisements coming to Apple Maps?
