Apple is conducting research to utilize generative artificial intelligence in the design processes of the chips it uses in its own hardware. The company’s Hardware Technologies Manager Johny Srouji said that they are closely following developments in this area and that artificial intelligence can make serious contributions in terms of efficiency in complex processes such as chip design.

Apple will use artificial intelligence in chip design

Srouji stated that generative artificial intelligence applications in electronic design automation (EDA) software are important for Apple. According to Srouji, these systems play a key role in managing the complexity of chip architecture and have the potential to accelerate the design process.

Apple later moved the special processors it started developing for mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad to the computer segment and integrated them into the Mac product line with the M series chips it introduced in 2020.

With this transition, Intel’s x86 architecture was moved away from and the ARM-based Apple Silicon architecture was adopted. The M1 chip was the first example of this transformation, and it was emphasized that the company took a great technical and strategic risk in this process.

Apple’s plan to integrate AI into the chip design process also coincides with the transformation that is taking place in the industry as a whole. Industry giants such as Cadence and Synopsys are competing to increase the use of AI in EDA software.
