Apple is developing its own 5G modem chips to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm. The move paves the way for a new generation of Apple devices with cellular connectivity, including the Mac and Vision Pro.
Is a Mac with cellular connectivity in development?
According to various sources, Apple plans to use its own 5G modems in iPhone as early as 2025. However, these modems will not be limited to iPhone. It was stated that Mac and mixed reality glasses Vision Pro will also receive cellular connection support.
Apple plans to offer cellular connectivity support on the Mac for the first time. This will allow users to connect to the internet without the need for Wi-Fi, as with the cellular-enabled iPad. However, it means that it will be subject to extra taxes in our country.
Apple’s first in-house developed 5G modems will underperform Qualcomm’s models. But the second-generation modems, expected to launch in 2026, are expected to match Qualcomm’s performance. This will make it possible to offer cellular-connected Mac models in 2026.
The Vision Pro is currently far from having cellular connectivity due to power efficiency concerns. However, thinner and lighter models may offer this feature in the near future. This would allow users to use the device without the need for an iPhone or Wi-Fi network.
Reports also suggest that Apple’s own 5G modems could be integrated into other products, such as lightweight augmented reality glasses, which are far from being released yet.
