User complaints are increasing that scratches appear easily on the dark surfaces of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air. Tests have revealed that the camera well is one of the devices’ most vulnerable spots.
Regarding the scratches seen on iPhone 17 models displayed in stores, Apple stated that these are not permanent scratches, but rather material transfer from the MagSafe stands, which can be removed with cleaning. The company also announced that worn stands will be replaced with new ones.
Regarding the iPhone 17 concerns, 9to5Mac reached out to Apple to ask if it could provide a compelling explanation as to why users are experiencing scratches on their expensive new flagships. The Cupertino company addressed one complaint, but Apple’s explanation regarding the scratches on the camera well has not satisfied most users.
MagSafe Stands Cause Scratches on the iPhone 17
Apple stated that it is working to address the defects in its physical stores and that worn MagSafe stands can be replaced with new ones. The company advised users who want to remove these marks to do “a little cleaning.” The main issue is the scratches around the camera. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max come with aluminum bodies instead of titanium. While this change offers advantages in terms of heat transfer, the aluminum casing is easily scratched, a drawback. Apple maintains that these surfaces are the same as the aluminum in MacBooks and that wear and tear should be considered normal. However, the rapid appearance of scratches on newer devices seems to be frustrating users.

Apple emphasizes that it has long held high standards for durability and is constantly improving its testing. However, experts warn that a few more weeks of daily user experience is needed to determine the device’s true durability.
