Apple continues to invest in sports for its digital streaming service. Apple TV+, which recently acquired the rights to broadcast the US soccer league Major League Soccer (MLS), doubled its subscriber base with Messi’s transfer to the league. In return, Apple decided to produce two separate documentaries for Lionel.
Messi docuseries on the way for Apple TV+
Apple celebrates the legendary soccer player’s arrival in Major League Soccer. LM10 is driving subscriber growth on Apple TV+’s MLS Season Pass service and is expanding his position on the digital streaming service with two documentaries.
Apple has greenlit the second documentary, focusing on Messi’s first season in MLS with Inter Miami CF. The six-part documentary is being prepared as a mini-series. It will focus on Messi’s first year performance in the US league.
Apple has also started preparing a different Messi documentary before. This documentary will tell the story of Messi’s journey to win the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. This four-part documentary will also be broadcast on Apple TV+.
According to Inter Miami’s executive director, Messi’s transfer to MLS has doubled Apple’s MLS Season Pass subscriptions. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed Messi’s contribution to subscriptions.
Apple is also investing in sports content globally. Apple TV+ is already trying to attract users with sports-oriented series such as They Call Me Magic, Super League and Make or Break.
