The developer beta of tvOS 18, the special operating system used in Apple TV devices, has been released, revealing details about Apple TV’s new Insight feature, which directly copies the popular X-Ray feature from Amazon Prime Video.
Apple TV Insight Heats Up Competition with Amazon Prime Video
Insight is Apple’s response to Amazon Prime Video’s X-Ray feature. With Prime Video’s X-Ray, you can pause any scene to see which actor is playing which role and get details about the music playing in that scene, including the song and album name.
With Apple’s Insight feature, while a movie or TV show is playing, you can pause or press the down button. This action will show you thumbnails of the actors on the screen. These thumbnails include the actors’ real names and their characters’ names. By clicking on a thumbnail, you can learn more about the actor and quickly navigate to other movies and TV shows they have been in.
Additionally, Apple TV is not shy about directing its users to competing platforms. When you click on other works the actor is featured in, if that work is not available on Apple TV, you can be directed to content on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Plex. The only exception in this area is Netflix, as the platform does not allow itself to be linked or redirected from other platforms.
The Insight feature is currently only available in the tvOS 18 developer beta, so users who are not part of the beta program will have to wait a bit longer to see it in the TV app on their Apple TV hardware.
