Apple’s Vision Pro is apparently encountering significant production challenges. According to recent reports, these issues are causing drastic reductions in output, affecting not only 2023 but the future projections as well.
A bold vision hampered by reality
While Apple maintains its standard policy of not publicly discussing the manufacturing volumes of its products, previous claims have been made regarding Sony. Sony is reportedly the sole provider for the Vision Pro’s displays. They were anticipated to achieve a peak production of 900,000 units in the initial year.
Yet, according to information from the Financial Times, Apple had been planning on manufacturing one million Vision Pro devices per annum. This target now seems unreachable. It’s alleged that Apple has now scaled back its orders to around 400,000 Vision Pro units for 2024.
Reports suggest that the considerable reduction stems from the immense complexity of manufacturing this groundbreaking device. This information, originating from unnamed sources allegedly close to Apple and supplier Luxshare, suggests that Luxshare is the sole assembler for the Vision Pro.
Manufacturing complexities: the heart of the problem
The reported manufacturing difficulties seem to stem from both the internal and external displays, including the distinctive, outward-facing curved display. The production of defect-free units, also known as the yield rate, seems to be a considerable issue.
According to the Financial Times, Apple has put off the launch of its second-generation Vision Pro, but the exact details are yet to be clear. This updated model is rumored to feature screens manufactured by Samsung and LG, presumably utilizing a distinct production process.
Apple plans to price the second-generation Vision Pro several hundreds of dollars cheaper than the original model. The company aims to launch this upgraded version in 2025.
