Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the next installment in Ubisoft’s popular open-world historical action series Assassin’s Creed, has gone through the longest development process in the series’ 20-year history. Set in Japan and featuring two main characters, the game will be released in November this year after four years of meticulous development.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ development process
Assassin’s Creed Shadows was announced as “Assassin’s Creed Red” in 2022, kicking off the hype train as the first major game set in Japan, developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the studio behind 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and 2015’s Syndicate, the game went into production in 2020. That means Shadows will have four years in development when it launches in November, which is above the series’ standards.
Karl Onnée, lead producer of Shadows, explained that long-term development processes are about the balance of time and cost, and that success is achieved through iteration. During this process, feedback from Assassin’s Creed Mirage contributed significantly to the development of Shadows.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage represented the series’ return to a stealth-oriented adventure. The Shadows team took Mirage’s test results and player feedback and focused on the stealth elements of the game. And thanks to collaboration between Ubisoft’s various teams and Anvil technology, the new features will be adapted across all projects.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on November 15th. Don’t forget to share your thoughts and expectations about the game in the comments.
