The famous director stated that the development of artificial intelligence is progressing much faster than expected, causing serious concerns.
“It’s getting increasingly difficult to write science fiction scripts. Any idea I come up with today takes at least three years to hit the big screen. Technology is advancing so fast that staying relevant three years from now has become a huge challenge,” said Cameron, emphasizing that artificial intelligence will deeply affect not just the film industry, but all of humanity.
In an interview with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on Netflix’s “What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates” program, Cameron expressed his concerns about people increasingly relying on machines and drifting away from their own sense of purpose.
“As people move away from decision-making and machines take their place, what will we replace their sense of purpose and meaning in life with?” asked the veteran director, warning that the uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence could lead to a dystopian future.
However, Cameron’s relationship with the world of technology is not limited to criticism. In 1993, he co-founded the visual effects studio Digital Domain. The famous producer is known for using advanced technology in his films, particularly the Avatar series. Last September, it was announced that he had joined the board of directors of artificial intelligence company Stability AI. The company’s CEO said, “James Cameron is someone who is already living in the future and waiting for us to catch up with him.”
