The Florida-based space tourism company, Space Perspective, has taken a revolutionary step toward opening the doors to human space travel. Next up is sending people 30 km above the Earth!
Balloon Travel to Space Scheduled for 2025!
The spacecraft, named Spaceship Neptune – Excelsior, lifted off on September 15 from Marine Spaceport Voyager, a ship off the coast of St. Petersburg, Florida, reaching an altitude of about 30,500 meters (100,000 feet). The flight lasted a full six hours, and after reaching an altitude above 99% of Earth’s atmosphere, the capsule made a controlled descent, landing safely in the sea.
This experiment demonstrated that several critical technologies for future commercial space travel are now operational. Space Perspective co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Taber MacCallum, emphasized the importance of the test flight, stating, “This is a milestone moment for Space Perspective. This unmanned flight not only proves the reliability of our technology but also brings us one step closer to making space accessible to everyone.”
Co-founder Jane Poynter added, “This flight shows how accessible and smooth our space experience will be. We are bringing space travel within reach of more people than ever before.”
The company plans to begin human space flights in 2025, with full commercial operations expected to start in 2026. It was officially announced that over 1,800 tickets have already been sold, with each seat priced at $125,000.
As for the capsule’s capacity, it will carry eight passengers in a pressurized cabin, slowly ascending to an altitude of about 32 kilometers, offering an unforgettable journey. Passengers will be treated to world-class food and drinks, comfortable seating, and a range of amenities such as custom-designed headsets.
