With the advancement of technology, we can now handle all our tasks digitally. Unfortunately, this also means we need to be much more vigilant against threats like hacking that compromise user security. A Microsoft employee recently shared a blog post highlighting that billions of Gmail users are at risk. So, what precautions should we take to protect ourselves from hackers?
Hackers Are Luring Gmail Users with Fake AI Calls
Sam Mitrovic, a Microsoft employee, stated in his blog that cybercriminals have started employing a new method to hack Gmail accounts. He mentioned receiving an email asking him to confirm the recovery of his Gmail account, which he categorically rejected.
Mitrovic later received a strange call claiming to be from Google about 40 minutes after rejecting the recovery request, but he did not answer. A week later, he received another recovery email and rejected that request as well.
At this point, things get interesting. After denying the recovery request, he received another call and decided to answer this time. The caller claimed to work for Google Support, stating that his account was in danger and that his data had been compromised.
During the conversation, Mitrovic noticed an important detail—the caller’s voice resembled the AI-generated voices we have encountered recently. He immediately ended the call, feeling that he had potentially thwarted a hacking attempt. He warned that all users, especially Gmail users, should remain cautious in such situations.
Here are some measures you can take to protect yourself:
- Use two-factor authentication for your accounts.
- Carefully scrutinize emails and notifications from untrusted sources.
- Don’t hesitate to report suspicious activities and utilize Google’s security tools.
