A painful event just before the design phase makes up the architects of this process. Hamsmith’s 18-month-old daughter lost her life due to swallowing a button battery from a remote control, leading her to establish a non-profit organization focusing on child safety.

It is known for its successful efforts to enact and support laws aimed at increasing child safety. Known as the Reese Act, this law mandates secure storage of batteries and stronger warning labels on all packaging.

The introduction of the new battery aims to address concerns about swallowed button and coin batteries, which lead to thousands of emergency room visits each year. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the results can be rapid and devastating when a child swallows a battery.

Even just two hours after swallowing a button battery, a child’s throat or esophagus can be burned. With the color warning technology offered by the new battery, significant progress is expected in identifying when a child has swallowed a battery and preventing potential adverse situations.
