Social media platform Bluesky published its moderation report for 2024. According to the report, the platform increased the number of users by 23 million last year, reaching 26 million users. However, this growth also brought complaints to the moderation team to a record level. The number of complaints, which was 358 thousand in 2023, increased to 6.48 million in 2024.
Which content was complained about the most?
Among the most reported content by Bluesky users, ‘harassment, trolling and intolerance’ stand out. These were followed by spam and misleading content. Especially with the increasing popularity of the platform, the proliferation of fake accounts has become a major problem. To curb this, Bluesky made its identity fraud policy more aggressive in November 2024 and quadrupled its moderation team.

The platform also received thousands of complaints about illegal content and unwanted sexual content. The report states that a total of 726 thousand complaints were included in the ‘Other’ category. The platform received 238 formal complaint applications in 2024 and responded to 146 of them. It also closed 66,308 accounts and deleted 35,842 spam and bot accounts through automated systems.
Bluesky plans to make some changes in the moderation process for 2025. A new system is being worked on that will allow users to receive feedback on reported content and directly appeal moderation decisions. It is also stated that more powerful automated systems will be developed to detect content violations faster.
