BYD has reached out to Tesla to jointly fight against their common enemy, internal combustion engine vehicles. BYD Vice President Stella Li said in an interview with the Financial Times, “Our common enemy is internal combustion engine vehicles. We must work together to change the industry.” She also emphasized that Beijing is more open to foreign companies compared to the West. Here are the details…
BYD calls on Tesla: “Let’s act together on electric vehicles!”
As you know, BYD and Tesla are undisputed rivals in the automotive market today. BYD has recently been taking aggressive steps in line with its global growth strategy. The company, which exceeded its goal of delivering 4 million vehicles for the first time last year, aims to do even better by surpassing Tesla and becoming the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer by 2025. However, despite being rivals in the market, BYD states that it is open to a possible collaboration with Elon Musk’s company.

Stella Li also said that China is ready to share electric vehicles and autonomous driving technologies with foreign companies. “The Chinese government is actually more open to the outside world, so maybe there are a lot of misconceptions here,” Li said. She also added that the Chinese automotive market is “the center of innovation” and encourages foreign companies to come to China: “The government will support you and work with you to implement any technology.”
Since electric vehicles are not growing as fast as expected in Europe, BYD is adapting its strategy in this region by focusing more on plug-in hybrid vehicles. These vehicles are also exempt from the new tariffs imposed by the European Commission on electric vehicles manufactured in China. Meanwhile, Stella Li also confirmed that BYD’s Denza brand will be officially introduced in Europe this year.
On the other hand, BYD has no plans to bring electric vehicles to the US market. Last year, the US imposed 100% tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China. US President Donald Trump recently imposed additional tariffs on imports from China and announced that similar measures will be implemented in Mexico and Canada. Stella Li said that no decision has yet been made regarding BYD’s plans to build a factory in Mexico.
