Frank Woods, one of the main characters of the Call of Duty: Black Ops series, was first introduced in the first game of the series. A former Marine, Frank was recruited by the CIA to the Military Assistance Command (SOG) in Vietnam. Woods, who we haven’t seen since Black Ops 2, returns in Call of Duty Black Ops 6!
Frank Woods returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6!
In an update shared on the Call of Duty official blog, the return of Frank Woods was announced as follows: “They Died at the Hands of a Traitor. Apparently, a Black Ops agent gained access to Operator Intelligence Communications and was identified as Frank Woods. Secret CIA documents are now in the public domain and operators are encouraged to find this information immediately.”
Frank participated in several covert military operations in Vietnam and was captured by the Viet Cong between 1968 and 1972. Frank also appeared later in the Call of Duty universe, but we don’t need to concern ourselves with that period right now.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will focus on the Gulf War from 1990-1991 as a time period. This means we’ll see a Frank Woods who has just lived through the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2.
Specifically, in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Frank was maimed by the game’s villain Raul Menendez. Menendez freed Frank and said he would avenge him later.
Menendez’s hatred for Frank Woods is personal. Frank had accidentally killed Menendez’s sister Josefina with a grenade during an operation. Although Menendez eventually fell, in the Black Ops 6 era, Menendez is supposed to have manipulated Woods and continued to ruin his life.
There is a lack of information about what happened to Frank in the time period between the games. We don’t know exactly why Frank was branded a traitor, but some fans have plausible theories. Was Frank brainwashed? Is there someone in the CIA currently targeting Frank and former SOG members? Is the “True Lies” code a clue to brainwashing or manipulation? We’ll find out in the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
