Leaked gameplay footage of the canceled Call of Duty game, called Call of Duty: Future Warfare, appeared on X, formerly known as Twitter. In the leaked images, we watch a mission of a game codenamed NX1, set in a futuristic environment and with a menu reminiscent of the original Modern Warfare trilogy.
The canceled Call of Duty game was being developed by Guitar Hero developer
In the gameplay footage, we watch a character named Walker wake up on the moon after an attack and return to a base under attack. When the airlock breaks, the atmosphere becomes tense and there are scenes where the characters are pulled into space. The video ends with Walker walking through the besieged base.
Former Call of Duty developer Brian Bright confirmed the authenticity of the leaked game on Twitter and provided information about the game’s development history. According to Bright, Future Warfare was being developed by Guitar Hero developer Neversoft because Infinity Ward encountered internal difficulties during the development of Modern Warfare 2.
The leaked gameplay reveals interesting connections and potential impacts on later Call of Duty games. For example, the Future Warfare domain was registered by Activision in 2010, along with Secret Warfare and Advanced Warfare. The final title would later be used for Sledgehammer Games’ 2014 Call of Duty game.
Leaked gameplay of Call of Duty: Future Warfare also shows that it has elements that may have been recycled for Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was released in 2013. The in-game hero shares the name Walker, similar to the main character in Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Additionally, the UI colors/fonts in the leaked images are quite similar to those in Ghosts, and there is a weapon in Ghosts called the NX-1 Disruptor, which is assumed to be a weapon from when the game was developed as Future Warfare.
Having faced difficulties during the Future Warfare era, original developer Infinity Ward also later made Infinite Warfare, a Call of Duty game set in space, released in 2016. The leaked images perhaps made investors think at the time that the world was not yet ready for a Call of Duty game set in space.
