Apple’s CarPlay, a popular in-car software platform, has expanded its reach to over 800 vehicle models in the United States. This update comes as General Motors (GM) announces its decision to phase out CarPlay support in future electric vehicles (EVs) to focus on its proprietary software developed in collaboration with Google.
New models join CarPlay lineup
The updated list of CarPlay-compatible vehicles includes many 2023 and 2024 models, indicating the platform’s continuing growth. Despite GM’s decision to phase out CarPlay support in its EVs, the software remains a top choice for many consumers. Apple’s WWDC last year reported that 79% of US buyers would only consider a vehicle compatible with CarPlay, with the platform being available in 98% of vehicles sold in the country.
Software GM’s move to create its own in-car software platform has faced backlash from customers who prefer CarPlay’s established features. However, in an interview with The Verge, GM remained firm on its plans to build a “holistically integrated” operating system, aiming to improve navigation and charging experiences for future EV owners.
Apple’s next CarPlay generation
Apple plans to introduce the next generation of CarPlay later this year, offering support for multiple dashboard displays, instrument cluster integration, built-in climate controls, an FM radio app, widgets, and increased personalization. Apple stated that the first vehicles supporting the new CarPlay experience will be announced later this year, with over a dozen automakers committed to offering it.
In related news, code on Apple’s servers suggests that British automaker Lotus is planning to support Apple’s digital car key feature in the Wallet app, which would allow future vehicles to be unlocked, locked, and started with an iPhone or Apple Watch.
