ChatGPT’s “Projects” feature, previously available only to paid subscribers, is now available in the free version. This feature allows users to organize their conversations with AI by topic.
Projects now free
“Projects” offers more than just a simple folder system. Users can set specific instructions for each project, allowing them to pre-define how the AI will respond to a specific topic. It’s also possible to limit the files the AI can access on a project-specific basis.

With this feature, OpenAI has also changed file upload limits. Free users can now upload 5 files, Plus subscribers 25, and Pro subscribers 40. Users can choose custom colors and icons to personalize their projects.
With this move, OpenAI follows a pattern it has previously followed. The company initially offered premium features like ChatGPT Voice and Deep Research to its subscribers before opening them to all users. However, free access comes with some restrictions. For example, even though the GPT-5 model is available to all users simultaneously, free users are limited to a daily usage limit.
The “Projects” feature is currently available on the web and Android apps. OpenAI announced that the feature will be available for the iOS app soon. What are your thoughts on this development? Feel free to share your valuable feedback with us in the comments section below.
