OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that ChatGPT has reached 800 million weekly active users. Speaking at the company’s annual developer event, Dev Day 2025, Altman emphasized that ChatGPT has quickly become an integral part of the daily lives of individuals, businesses, developers, and public institutions.
ChatGPT Record Growth in Users
Altman announced that more than 4 million developers worldwide are using OpenAI technologies. He noted that more than 800 million users utilize ChatGPT every week, and that more than 6 billion transactions are processed per minute through the OpenAI API. According to Altman, ChatGPT is no longer just an AI chat tool; it has evolved into a comprehensive platform that plays an active role in many areas, from productivity and education to business and public services.
OpenAI announced that its user base was approaching 700 million in August, and that this figure was around 500 million by the end of March. This rapid increase in a short period of time clearly demonstrates the rapid global adoption of ChatGPT.
The growth in its user base has led OpenAI to expand its infrastructure. To meet growing demand, the company is building new data centers and procuring AI chips. These investments aim to both enhance the user experience and enable developers to develop more complex projects.
OpenAI’s growth momentum isn’t limited to ChatGPT. The company recently introduced a new version of its video production tool, Sora, and announced a new platform in partnership with Stripe where developers can build AI-powered commerce systems. These steps aim to make OpenAI’s technology more accessible not only to individual users but also to commercial enterprises.
The company’s rapid rise is reflected in its market capitalization. Last week’s private share sale brought OpenAI’s valuation to $500 billion. After a total of $6.6 billion in shares sold, OpenAI became the world’s most valuable private company.
Originally founded as a nonprofit research organization, OpenAI has transitioned to a semi-commercial model. By reinvesting revenues into AI research, the company aims to accelerate its technological development and make its systems accessible to a wider user base.
