OpenAI’s AI-powered chat platform ChatGPT will now offer direct code editing on the macOS operating system. This new capability makes development processes more practical, allowing users to easily make changes via popular development tools such as Xcode, VS Code, and JetBrains.
ChatGPT can now edit code on macOS
Developers can enable the “auto apply” mode offered by ChatGPT to quickly make edits. This allows code to be added directly to the relevant project without the need for an additional click to confirm changes. For example, a developer working in Xcode can use ChatGPT to add code directly to a specific section.

This feature is currently available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers via the macOS app. OpenAI will also offer this feature for Enterprise, Edu, and free users next week. Alexander Embiricos, a member of OpenAI’s desktop product team, also announced in a statement that Windows users will soon have access to a similar capability.
ChatGPT’s direct code editing feature will be a continuation of the “work with applications” capability that the company introduced in beta in November 2024. This move by OpenAI puts the company in direct competition with popular AI-powered coding tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursor.
In addition, it was claimed that the company plans to launch a more comprehensive product aimed at developers in the coming period. So what do you think about this? You can share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
