In 2024, global electric vehicle sales increased by 25 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 17.3 million units. This figure constituted 20 percent of total vehicle sales. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), China accounts for the largest share of this growth.
China breaks records in electric vehicle sales
China accounted for nearly two-thirds of electric vehicle sales worldwide, reaching 11.3 million units. This is almost twice the total sales in the rest of the world.

The growth in the electric vehicle sector in China has reached these levels thanks to government incentive programs and increasing demand for long-range vehicles. Electric vehicle sales in China, which were only 1 million in 2019, have increased 11-fold in five years.
China is expected to maintain its global market leadership in 2025 and sell a total of 12.9 million electric vehicles. In the US, electric vehicle sales increased by 10 percent to 1.5 million units in 2024. This increase, created by the launch of new vehicle models and government incentives, has significantly increased interest in the sector.
Electric vehicle sales in Europe decreased by 6 percent to 3.2 million units. The main reason for this decrease was the decrease in demand in Germany. However, the UK has become the leading country in battery electric vehicle sales in Europe thanks to the zero-emission vehicle requirement.
Electric vehicle sales are also increasing rapidly in developing countries other than China. Brazil and Indonesia attracted attention with growth rates of 140 percent and 190 percent in 2024, respectively. Electric vehicle sales worldwide are expected to increase by 18 percent in 2025, exceeding 20 million units.
