Chinese technology giant Baidu has introduced its new artificial intelligence models Ernie X1 and Ernie 4.5. The company stated that these models compete with OpenAI and DeepSeek in terms of performance, while also offering lower costs.
Baidu announces new artificial intelligence models
Baidu defines Ernie X1 as “a reasoning model that offers the same performance as DeepSeek R1 at half the price.” Ernie 4.5 was designed as the company’s multi-modal base model. According to Baidu, this model surpasses OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 in many criteria and offers services at only 1% cost. The company also announced that Ernie Bot will be available to the public on April 1.

The new models are planned to be integrated into Baidu’s ecosystem. These models are aimed to be used in various products of the company, especially Baidu Search, China’s largest search engine. This critical move could further intensify the cost-focused competition of major players such as OpenAI and DeepSeek.
When it comes to pricing, Baidu’s Ernie 4.5 model operates at low costs of 0.004 Chinese yuan for 1,000 entry tokens and 0.016 yuan for 1,000 exit tokens. In dollar-based comparisons, it was seen that Ernie 4.5 offers 98-99% lower costs compared to OpenAI’s GPT-4.5. In reasoning models, Ernie X1 offers 98% lower costs than OpenAI’s o1 model, while it also offers half the price of the DeepSeek R1 model.
Baidu’s new artificial intelligence models show that the AI competition between China and the US is getting even more intense. The company aims to increase interest in open source models. It was announced that the Ernie 4.5 series will be released as open source on June 30. No specific date was shared for the X1 model. So what do you think about this?
