The GL6 type active protection system (APS), which protects China’s tanks against rockets, missiles and loitering ammunition, has been demonstrated for the first time. The first real rocket test footage released by China Central Television (CCTV) shows that the system can neutralize multiple threats with incredible speed. Why is this system so important for modern warfare technologies?
China’s GL6 Tank Defense System was seen for the first time in real rocket tests!
When we watch the footage in the video, we see that the GL6 active protection system has an advanced slewing-type design. Thanks to radar and electro-optical sensors, it can detect incoming threats and calculate the direction of movement and speed of the target. The system can protect tanks from attacks by instantly destroying fired ammunition.
How does the GL6 active protection system work?
The GL6 system, praised by the Chinese, consists of four main components:
- Radar Detection system: Detects enemy munitions.
- Integrated processor: Analyzes threats and determines defense strategy.
- Launch system: Stops attacks by firing counter munitions.
- Destructive Ordnance system: Detonates incoming threats in the air, preventing damage to the tank.
According to test footage released by CCTV, GL6 can intervene up to 4 times against threats coming from a certain direction. It was stated that the system successfully intercepted 10 different types of target munitions and had a high success rate.

What threats does it protect against?
- Rockets (RPG and similar weapons)
- Anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM)
- Loitering munitions (Kamikaze drones and smart bombs)
In short, the GL6 system can greatly increase the protection of tanks on modern battlefields. Especially considering the proliferation of drones and guided munitions, active defense systems can change the fate of war.
