China has once again attracted attention with its innovative approach to military technology. The weapon, called the “Metal Storm”, consists of five or more barrels, each capable of firing 450 thousand rounds per minute. The weapon, which fires millions of rounds per minute, will be used to intercept hypersonic missiles. Details are in our news…
China’s “Metal Storm” weapon: Each barrel is capable of firing 450,000 rounds per minute
First of all, the weapon is capable of stopping threats exceeding Mach 7 speed. In fact, the original concept of the “Metal Storm” weapon was developed by Mike O’Dwyer in Australia in the 1990s. However, this technology was abandoned in Australia due to logistical and technical difficulties. China took over this project and produced a more advanced version using its national scientific and technological resources.
The engineering solution for the weapon is called the boxed rotary firing system. This is a mechanism that uses pre-loaded barrels that can be completely replaced after firing. This method significantly reduces ammunition loading times and minimizes barrel wear.
Another remarkable feature of the Metal Storm weapon is its coil-based electronic trigger mechanism, which replaces the traditional mechanical trigger system. This system provides high efficiency and can fire in 17.5 microseconds. The electronic trigger uses an alloy wire that can detonate each bullet without contact. This innovation far exceeds the capacity of conventional machine guns to fire thousands of rounds per minute, more than meeting the demands of the PLA (People’s Liberation Army of China).
The Metal Storm is said to be much more advanced than previous prototypes in the West. For example, the 36-barreled system developed by Australia could fire 1 million rounds per minute. The most advanced US Phalanx weapon can only fire 4,500 rounds per minute. When we look at the test results in China, we can say that this Chinese version completely outperforms the prototypes in the West.
