Researchers from China’s Beihang University have developed a new micro-robot called BHMbot-B, breaking records in speed and capability. The robot, which is only 15 mm long and weighs 2 grams, has become one of the fastest micro robots in the world. So fast, in fact, that it exceeds the speed of movement of many real insects. Unique in its ability to move forward and backward, the robot insect can move forward at 38.7 body length per second (BL/s) and backward at 44 BL/s. In fact, BHMbot-B’s movement mechanism is based on an electromagnetic actuator system. Inside, a magnet, a coil and a coupling mechanism generate vibrations with the help of an alternating current.

The vibrations cause the robot to move forward or backward. The orientation is controlled by changing the vibration frequency, allowing the robot to move without turning. BHMbot-B is ambitious in many other areas besides speed. For example, the robot can carry loads up to 32 times its own weight and can handle heavy loads at a speed of 3.2 BL/s.

It can also move smoothly on different surfaces such as glass, sand and even curved pipes. But in which areas will it be used? Actually, the potential uses for the micro robot are quite broad. These include:

• Search and rescue operations in confined spaces.
• Data collection equipped with microscopic cameras and sensors.
• Precision tasks and operations in industrial robotics applications.

Unlike previous microrobots, BHMbot-B can maneuver backwards without losing position when changing its direction of motion. Researchers are working hard to further develop the robot’s capabilities. The next step is to integrate autonomous navigation and environmental sensing capabilities. Thus, the robot will be able to move completely independently.
