The legendary Civilisation series is stepping into virtual reality. 2K and Firaxis Games announced Sid Meier’s Civilisation VII VR. The game, which will offer a simulation experience in VR, is being developed exclusively for Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Accordingly, it is scheduled for release in the spring of 2025.
Civilization VII is coming with a special VR version for Meta Quest
Civilisation VII VR will not be a VR mod of the standard game; it will be a completely redesigned production. Players will experience the world from a new perspective and manage their empire from the ‘Command Desk’.
According to Firaxis, this table can be viewed from a distance for strategic planning or used to inspect cities and units up close. A mixed reality feature will integrate the Command Desk with the player’s real-world environment.
Developed in collaboration with PlaySide Studios, Civilization VII VR is optimised for virtual reality. The game experience is designed to be at a relatively faster pace, although it can be adjusted according to player preference. A multiplayer mode will also be included, allowing for strategic encounters in a virtual environment.
Beyond the core gameplay, there will also be a special Archives area. Information about each civilisation’s victories and historical details will be available. Enemy leaders will also appear virtually around the Command Desk at key moments and diplomacy can be established.
Firaxis Games highlighted Meta Quest’s potential to redefine the strategy genre. Players can currently add Civilisation VII VR to their wishlist on the Meta Store.
