There is exciting news for one of the best-selling and most beloved models of the Sony PlayStation brand, the PSP. According to reports, the Japanese tech giant has been working on PSP 2 for a long time and plans to release it next year. Here are the details about the next-generation handheld console…
PSP 2 is Coming to Compete with PC Handheld Consoles
Sony made a huge splash in the handheld console market with the PlayStation Portable (PSP), selling over 100 million units worldwide. However, after the PlayStation Vita, which featured a touch OLED screen and advanced hardware, failed in sales, Sony distanced itself from the handheld console market. Now, it seems Sony is preparing to make a comeback.
Sources close to Sony suggest that the recently released PlayStation Portal served as a “trial balloon” for PSP 2. The device received much more demand and sales than expected, accelerating Sony’s efforts for PSP 2.
The unexpected sales success of the PlayStation Portal and the sales figures achieved by PC handheld devices like the Steam Deck have refocused Sony’s attention on handheld consoles. In the past year and a half, the success of various devices such as the Asus ROG Ally X, Steam Deck OLED, MSI Claw 8 AI+, Lenovo Legion Go, and Zotac Zone has been notable. Additionally, Sony has the unique advantage of offering its exclusive games on a handheld console.
With reports that the PS5 Pro might be released in September, it indicates that Sony will update the PS5 and PS5 Slim with newer and more powerful hardware before PSP 2 arrives. If the information is correct, we could see PSP 2 in November next year.
