According to Apple’s security report, the vulnerability resided in ImageIO, a system that allows devices to process image files. The report states that a specially crafted malicious image file could cause memory corruption on a targeted device. This could open a door for cyberattackers to infiltrate the system.
Apple stated that it is “aware of a report suggesting that this vulnerability may have been used in a highly sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.” The fact that the vulnerability was discovered directly by Apple, rather than by third-party researchers, is noteworthy.

Apple has released the following updates to address this critical vulnerability:
- iOS 18.6.2
- iPadOS 18.6.2
- iPadOS 17.7.10 (For older iPads)
