This year, Mac gaming is set to witness a significant enhancement with the integration of DirectX 12 into CrossOver, as announced by CodeWeavers recently.
CrossOver and DirectX 12: Ushering in a new era of Mac gaming
CrossOver provides a platform for users of macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS to operate Windows apps as native, by translating Windows APIs into counterparts compatible with Mac. At present, CrossOver supports Microsoft’s DirectX 11 only. DirectX 12, the most recent set of graphics rendering APIs available on Windows and Xbox, promises to boost performance and efficiency, while maximizing the use of multiple CPU and GPU cores.
To navigate around bugs, DirectX 12 games will be added to CrossOver on a title-by-title basis. As the CodeWeavers’ press release indicates, the journey to bring DirectX 12 to macOS gaming is only just beginning.
The pioneer: Diablo II Resurrected
The initial victory is the running of Diablo II Resurrected on macOS with preliminary pre-alpha builds of CrossOver 23. Even though there are still bugs to be fixed, having the game running at all represents a substantial accomplishment. However, supporting DirectX 12 for other games will require addressing specific bugs on a game-by-game basis.
The upcoming CrossOver 23 will be the first to support a DirectX 12 game, starting with “Diablo II Resurrected”. CodeWeavers maintains a compatibility database for users to check the performance of different games with the software. More titles are expected to be included in the future.
The release of the first beta of CrossOver 23 is scheduled for this summer, with the official launch set for later this year.
