On April 11th, a new update will be released that enhances the game’s already amazing graphics with full ray tracing (path tracing) through Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode.
Full ray tracing actually means accurately simulating light across a scene. This technique is already commonly used by visual effects artists to create graphics in animated series and films. Its use in real-time games has become possible thanks to the RT Cores of the GeForce RTX GPUs and the AI-acceleration of NVIDIA DLSS.

Previous techniques focused on separate shadows, reflections, and illuminations for a few light sources. Full ray tracing offers accurate shadows, reflections, and lighting on all objects by modeling light characteristics from almost an unlimited number of light sources. With full ray tracing and RTXDI, almost all light sources now reflect physically accurate soft shadows. Players can enjoy the game with better depth, detail, realism, and improved shadows.
In fact, Cyberpunk 2077 has a full day-night cycle. Global Illumination (GI) is also calculated using ray tracing to enhance indirect lighting from all light sources, including the sun and moon. Render techniques such as Screen Space Reflections, Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, and existing GI solutions are replaced with a single unified algorithm that provides more accurate scene and object lighting with the update.
