Daimler Truck has completed another significant milestone in hydrogen fuel cell truck technology. Mercedes GenH2 prototypes were tested in the Swiss Alps under challenging conditions such as hot weather, high altitude, and steep slopes.

The tests, which focused specifically on the powertrain, thermal management, and hydrogen-battery compatibility during the 10,000-kilometer journey, are in preparation for small-scale series production to begin in 2026.

According to the company’s statement, the GenH2 trucks were tested on mountain passes between 600 and 2,478 meters in the canton of Valais. With temperatures reaching 35°C, the high altitude posed a critical test for the cooling systems. The vehicles, which were tested in winter conditions on icy surfaces in March, completed a total of 146 kilometers of climb during the summer.

The tests included detailed analyses of the performance of the electric motors, the compatibility of the hydrogen fuel cell with the battery and tank systems, as well as the Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) system. PPC technology calculates slope and road data in advance and adjusts the engine’s power distribution accordingly. This allows the battery to be charged and the fuel cell load to be reduced before ascending the hill.

Daimler announced that the GenH2 trucks have successfully passed the testing phase and demonstrated high reliability. This data will shape the production process ahead of field trials with logistics companies, which will begin in 2026. The company plans a limited production run of 100 vehicles in the initial phase.

The eActros 600 electric tractor model is currently on sale in more than 15 countries. However, the hydrogen-powered GenH2 Truck is progressing more slowly due to its more complex technology and cost constraints. Despite this, Daimler Truck believes hydrogen will play a key role in long-distance transport. The company predicts that the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered heavy commercial vehicles in Europe could be possible in the early 2030s.
