Google is preparing to integrate a desktop-like user interface into the Android operating system. The new mode, which works similarly to Samsung’s long-offered DeX feature, allows Android devices to provide a computer experience when connected to external displays.
Desktop mode offered for Android phones
The desktop mode, which appeared in the Android 16 beta version, can significantly increase the capabilities of mobile devices, especially in productivity-oriented usage scenarios.

A user activated this feature on a Google Pixel 8 Pro model running the Android 16 beta version. The device, which was connected to a monitor via USB-C, appeared to have a screen appearance similar to a desktop computer interface.
While the classic Android status bar is located at the top of the user interface, there is a task bar at the bottom that provides quick access to applications. There are navigation keys on the right corner of the task bar and a large application drawer on the left side.
In this new mode, applications run in freely moveable and resizable windows, like those on Android tablets. The screen split feature has also been introduced so that two applications can be used side by side at the same time.
However, desktop mode is not expected to be included in the first versions of Android 16. It is said that the feature will first be offered in a limited way in developer options, and then it will be officially available with Android 17.
