Microsoft, which acquired Nokia years ago and developed Windows Phone devices, failed to meet its targets in the mobile market. After that, the smartphone industry turned into a race between Android and iOS. However, Microsoft CEO said that canceling the Lumia series and the Windows Phone system was a mistake.
Microsoft CEO: We made a mistake with the Windows Phone
Microsoft has a turbulent history in the mobile space. These struggles are now openly acknowledged by past and present executives of the company. CEO Satya Nadella reflected on why Microsoft failed to succeed after acquiring Nokia in 2013
Admitting that Windows Phone could have been handled better, Nadella explained that they lost 7.6 billion dollars because of Nokia. However, he said that the missteps in the mobile field were made with previous CEOs Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer.
Earlier, Bill Gates said that losing the mobile OS battle to Android was “the biggest mistake ever.” Former CEO Ballmer, who was slow to react to the iPhone, said that his “biggest regret is not focusing on phones in the 2000s.”
Microsoft had wanted to expand its efforts in this area with the latest Windows 10 Mobile. However, when the operations were not successful, the support for this system was cut in 2019. Thus, Microsoft withdrew from the mobile market in 2020.
Despite stopping Windows Phone, Microsoft continues to invest in the mobile space with Android applications and partnerships. For example, the recently introduced Surface Duo series is available with Android, while Office applications can be downloaded from stores.
