An important claim has come to the fore regarding the Apple Watch Series 9, SE and Ultra 2 models introduced by Apple last year. So much so that the company’s statement that these models are “carbon neutral” was found misleading by some consumers and the company took them to court. The plaintiffs claim that Apple does not actually reduce its carbon emissions to zero, but only makes calculations on paper. So how did the technology giant face these accusations? Here are the details…
Apple’s environmental claims in court
Apple aimed to attract environmentally friendly consumers by stating that its new Apple Watch models are carbon neutral. However, the lawsuit filed in the Northern District Court in the US state of California claims that this claim does not reflect the truth. According to the lawsuit, the technology giant relied on carbon offset projects to become carbon neutral, but it is claimed that these projects do not make any real contribution to the environment.

One of the main points of the lawsuit is Apple’s investments in the Chyulu Hills Project in Kenya and the Guinan Project in China in its carbon offsetting studies. The plaintiffs say that the company uses these projects to reduce carbon emissions, but they state that these areas are already forested and protected areas. In other words, it is emphasized that these areas will continue to naturally retain carbon even without Apple’s support.
For this reason, the plaintiffs state that they find the company’s carbon neutral claims deceptive. They say that if they had known this information from the beginning, they might not have purchased the Apple Watch or preferred older models that came out in previous years.
The plaintiffs filed this lawsuit to prevent Apple from using the carbon neutral label and to demand compensation from the company. The court’s decision is eagerly awaited.
