OpenAI, in partnership with PayPal, is launching a new era that allows ChatGPT users to shop directly from the chat interface. Now, users can complete their purchases by paying in just a few steps during a conversation. This innovation opens the door to a new era of AI-powered digital shopping.
Purchase history can be viewed
In the new system, users will be able to purchase the product they want using the instant payment option within the ChatGPT interface. Payments can be made via PayPal, bank account, or credit card. Additionally:
- Return and dispute processes can be initiated through ChatGPT
- This structure will make the user experience more streamlined and centrally managed.
This integration also offers significant convenience for the seller. PayPal will handle infrastructure processes such as payment verification, routing, and transaction processing. This allows sellers to focus on product sales and customer experience rather than dealing with financial operational details.
The project, called Buy it in ChatGPT, is primarily available to US users. Currently, products can be purchased through Etsy sellers. However, it is not yet available in Turkey. Furthermore, PayPal does not offer services in Turkey. OpenAI is also in numerous collaboration discussions with Shopify merchants, including brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori. This will integrate multi-item shopping cart support into ChatGPT.
The infrastructure developed for this multi-product support has been made open source under the name Agentic Commerce Protocol, allowing developers to contribute to the system.
PayPal isn’t limited to OpenAI with this partnership. It’s also partnering with other companies like Google and Perplexity to expand AI-based shopping experiences. PayPal President Alex Chriss describes this system as enabling the transition from chat to payment with just a few taps.
This development could provide transformative momentum to numerous industries, from e-commerce to AI-based chat solutions. The user experience is expected to simplify and accelerate, while operational burdens are reduced for merchants. However, the system’s success in widespread adoption will be directly linked to the reliability of the infrastructure and the effectiveness of the integrations.
So, what are your thoughts? Would you trust AI platforms with your card information?
