The password sharing ban, which was first introduced by Netflix and received a great reaction, is now on Disney’s agenda. Disney+, which wants to prevent the use of a single account by more than one person, has decided to ban password sharing in Canada.

Disney+ subscribers in Canada will experience some changes to password policies starting November 1. Emails the platform sent to customers this week indicated that it will no longer allow accounts to be shared “outside of homeowners”.

Under the new rules, a Disney+ account can only be used in one household. The company also said it would follow up with subscribers to check whether this policy was being violated. Those found to have shared login details outside the household could have their access terminated.

This change to password sharing comes as Disney+ has been losing subscribers in recent months. The streaming platform has reported losing more than 2 million subscribers worldwide in the last three months. Restricting account sharing may allow the number of Disney+ subscribers to increase again.

The password sharing ban, which Netflix tested and received a great reaction, actually benefited the company. Research showed that Netflix gained 5.8 million new subscribers after the decision.

Although Disney has said it will identify those who share passwords, it has not provided information on how it will do this. However, there is a possibility that accounts could be closed or suspended.
