US President Donald Trump has slammed Apple’s plans to shift iPhone production from China to India. Speaking at an event in Doha, Trump made it clear that he does not want the company’s manufacturing operations in India to expand.
Trump does not approve of Apple’s India project
Apple plans to move the assembly process of all iPhones to be introduced to the US market from China to India by the end of 2026. The additional customs duties implemented during Trump’s term are behind this decision. The company wants to diversify its production network in order to avoid these high taxes.

Trump told Apple CEO Tim Cook, “I’ve been very good to you, but now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want that.” The US President also stated that he is not against investments made for the Indian market.
Apple first started manufacturing in India in 2017. Initially, the country produced more affordable models and began assembling flagship iPhone models as of 2023. In fiscal 2024, the value of iPhones manufactured in India increased by 60 percent to reach $22 billion.
Currently, around 80 percent of iPhones sold in the US are manufactured in China. Over 2,700 parts from 187 different suppliers are used to assemble an iPhone. Therefore, shifting all production to the US will be both a very costly and extremely difficult step for the company.
