A new development has shaken the wind energy industry in the US. The Donald Trump administration has halted construction of the Revolution Wind project, which was nearing completion. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, a division of the US Department of the Interior, officially suspended the project citing “national security concerns” and the potential for repurposing the area. The project was approximately 80% complete.

The project, planned to provide electricity to more than 350,000 households in Rhode Island and Connecticut, had received all federal and state permits. Orsted, one of the project’s developers, announced that they were considering legal action against the decision.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration halted the Empire Wind project off the coast of New York for similar reasons. At the time, companies reportedly lost $50 million due to just a week’s delay.
The Trump administration is increasing its pressure on renewable energy nationwide. In January, Trump halted the development of new offshore wind projects and also made it harder for wind and solar projects to qualify for federal tax incentives.
Experts say that limiting renewable energy investments in the face of rising electricity demand could raise electricity prices. While investments in data centers, electric vehicles, and domestic production put pressure on grids, Trump’s stance on wind farms is being interpreted as an attempt to protect the fossil fuel industry.
