The ban on TikTok in the US was planned to take effect on 19 January 2025 on the grounds of national security concerns: President-elect Donald Trump, however, applied to the Supreme Court to postpone this ban. Trump demanded to be given the chance to find a political solution before taking over his administration. Here are the details
Trump wants to delay the ban
In the petition prepared by Trump’s lawyer, ‘President Trump does not take a position on the substantive legal aspects of the case. Instead, he respectfully requests the Court to consider halting ByteDance’s separation from TikTok, which is set for 19 January 2025,’ the petition said. This move revealed that Trump started to take an active role in national issues and took a different approach to TikTok.

During his first presidential term, Trump tried to ban TikTok due to national security threats. However, he joined the platform in his 2024 presidential campaign and used TikTok effectively, especially to reach young voters. Although Trump still considers TikTok to harbour potential security risks, he opposes a complete ban of the platform.
The law stipulates that TikTok must be separated from its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned in the US. The law, signed by President Joe Biden in April and passed with bipartisan support in Congress, is based on the claim that TikTok poses a national security risk. The US government is concerned that ByteDance could hand over user information to the Chinese government or use the platform to spread disinformation…
The new US president, Donald Trump, said the ban should not be implemented at this stage and asked for time to resolve the issue through political means. Trump’s approach aims to maintain the platform’s influence on the user base in the US. Trump, who has previously held talks with ByteDance, believes that the problem can be resolved through negotiation.
