Aurora has launched the first driverless trucking service in the US. The company’s fully autonomous trucks have successfully completed a 1,900-kilometer delivery route between Dallas and Houston, operating on public highways in Texas without a driver.
Driverless trucks begin operating in the US
Aurora CEO Chris Urmson announced that they are the first company to safely and continuously operate driverless trucks on highways. The company plans to expand the service to new routes such as El Paso and Phoenix by the end of the year.
It has long been expected that the first steps in driverless transportation would be taken in these areas, as highways are less complex than urban traffic. However, until now, many companies have had to delay their launches due to technological and regulatory hurdles.
Despite the public backlash against autonomous vehicles, Aurora stands out with its cautious and safety-focused approach. The company, which follows a similar strategy to companies such as Waymo, has chosen a gradual commercialization path.
Founded in 2017 by engineers from Uber, Tesla and Waymo, Aurora is working hard to achieve a higher success rate, especially on urban roads and complex traffic scenarios.
The company has only carried out supervised deliveries for 4 years, mostly in Texas. During this process, a total of 4.8 million kilometers were traveled and more than 10 thousand deliveries were completed.
