Google is bringing Android’s earthquake early warning system to smartwatches with the Wear OS operating system. The security update included in the company’s Google Play Services version 25.21 includes information that Wear OS users will receive warnings via their smartwatches in the event of an earthquake. This innovation is planned to be available this year with the Wear OS version 6.
Android earthquake notification system will also come to smartwatches
Android’s earthquake warning and detection system was put into operation in Turkey in 2021. The system detects tremors using accelerometers on users’ phones and sends data to a central server.

This data is evaluated with instant analyzes to warn users seconds before an earthquake occurs. The system currently only works with Android phones. With the new development, the same warning mechanism will now be available on smartwatches.
The notifications sent via smartwatches will also include information about the magnitude of the earthquake and the distance to the epicenter. It is stated that these notifications will work in the same way as the system on phones. The user will receive different types of warnings depending on their location and the intensity of the earthquake.
The system used on Android devices offers two-stage notification. If the earthquake is minor and far from the epicenter, only the “Attention Warning” is displayed. This notification does not affect the device’s sound, vibration or Do Not Disturb settings.
However, if the earthquake is moderate or major and the user is close to the epicenter, the “Action Warning” is activated. This notification disables the device’s silent mode and gives a loud alarm, and safety instructions are provided on a red screen.
Since smart watches are worn on the wrist, a sudden shaking warning can reach the person more directly and quickly. So what do you think about this? You can share your opinions with us in the comments section below.
