Elon Musk-founded xAI has taken another step forward in its field of artificial intelligence development. The company has posted a job posting for a “Fullstack Engineer – Waifus” to work on virtual anime characters that users can emotionally connect with. The job posting states that the new position is structured around a two-pronged mission: “understanding the universe and winning users’ hearts.”
xAI is officially seeking an “anime girl engineer”
The posting indicates that the engineering duties are not limited to technical development but also touch upon areas such as character design and the creation of AI behavior models centered on emotional interaction. Among the characters the company has already developed are “Ani,” a gothic-style anime girl, and “Bad Rudy,” a red panda-like character.

These two characters are just two of the experimental AI personalities integrated into the new version of xAI’s Grok platform. Ani stands out with her gothic attire, melancholic tone, and flirty dialogues with users. The NSFW (inappropriate content) mode accessible within the app allows this character to respond explicitly to erotic content.
Bad Rudy, however, is at the center of a completely different controversy. With the “dark mode,” which can be activated in the app settings, this character can make explicit calls for violence, such as school burnings, attacks on places of worship, and praise of genocide. User experiences during the trial period reveal that Bad Rudy can present this content without any filters or warnings, and that security limits are virtually ineffective.
While xAI is believed to present these characters for “chaotic entertainment,” the fact that users can access unethical content with minimal guidance highlights serious shortcomings in AI security.
These personalities integrated into the Grok app, which engage with users emotionally and even engage in violence-inducing language, has sparked an unprecedented debate in the industry.
The company has released an update for Grok to address these issues. However, the extent to which the update has impacted content restrictions remains unclear. The expectation that characters like Ani and Bad Rudy will be supplemented with new personalities in the future demonstrates that the company is embracing this direction not as a temporary experiment, but as a permanent strategy.
The job posting reveals that xAI is approaching this project not just for entertainment, but also as a platform where AI systems can forge deeper connections with humans. However, the extent to which this approach respects AI safety and ethical principles remains to be answered.
