Elon Musk has publicly announced his new goal to change the balance in the artificial intelligence sector. He claims that his own venture, xAI, will achieve a computing capacity greater than all its competitors combined within five years.
Musk’s Ambitious Statement
This claim came in response to a social media post praising the xAI team’s efficiency and scalability. Musk’s assertion is backed by data from SemiAnalysis, a company known for its semiconductor analysis. The company operates a facility in Tennessee exceeding 400 megawatts and has ordered a dedicated power plant from abroad to increase this capacity to 2 gigawatts at a single point.
Musk, who uses the name “Macrohard” to rival Microsoft in the software world, has transformed this venture from a joke into a massive investment project. The company has launched a massive $20 billion fundraising campaign to expand its Colossus 2 data center and add new Nvidia processors to its inventory.
xAI previously attracted attention in the technology world by completing the installation of a supercluster encompassing 100,000 processors in just 19 days. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang confirmed xAI’s installation speed, stating that such an operation normally takes four years. Musk’s ultimate plan is to control a power equivalent to 50 million high-end graphics processing units within five years.
Despite this aggressive growth strategy, investments from other players in the sector are also not slowing down. OpenAI plans to expand its Texas facility to gigawatt levels by 2026, while the Chinese government is working on a $70 billion budget for domestic processor production.
Considering the combined power of giants like Amazon, Google, and Oracle, Musk’s goal of single-handedly surpassing the entire industry presents a significant logistical and industrial challenge. Currently training its Grok model with 230,000 processors, xAI, with its monthly spending capacity exceeding one billion dollars, positions itself as the most formidable player in this global race.
