Alarm bells are ringing for uBlock Origin users. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are preparing to end support for Manifest V2-based plugins such as uBlock Origin.
Are ad blockers in danger? New move from Chrome and Edge
Canary, the latest test version of the Edge browser, has started disabling Manifest V2 plugins, including uBlock Origin. Users are shown a warning message that reads ‘This plugin is no longer supported. Microsoft Edge recommends that it be uninstalled.’

Although plugins can be manually reactivated, this development raises questions about the future of Manifest V2 plugins in Edge. This move also shows that Microsoft is moving in parallel with Google.
Chrome started to disable Manifest V2 plugins as of June 2024. While Google has clearly stated the roadmap of this transition process; Microsoft’s plans are still unclear. It should be noted that these changes stem from the Chromium project, which underpins Chrome and Edge.
For now, these changes only affect the Edge Canary version. Stable, Beta and Developer versions are not yet affected by extension support. Also, uBlock Origin is still available in the Edge Add-on Store.
On the other hand, the uBlock Origin developer recommended users to switch to the Manifest V3-based uBlock Origin Lite version with more limited features. Another option for users may be to switch to the Mozilla Firefox browser, which has announced that it will maintain support for Manifest V2 plugins.
