Epic Games has made important claims in a lawsuit against Google. It said that the company, the developer of Android, can do whatever it wants with the Play Store. This limits the authority of third-party stores like the Epic Games Store.
What does Epic Games want from the Play Store?
In the US filing, Epic said that Google does not allow users to freely download apps from any source. In this context, it argued that the company does not highlight alternative app stores or developer pages.
It also objected to Google blocking sideloading (APK installation) of apps through security warnings. Epic also disagrees with Google’s practice of charging up to 30 percent commission on in-app purchases. Accordingly, there should be alternatives to the Play Store payment system.
He also criticized Google for retaliating against developers who oppose its Play Store policies. It said the software giant has “abusive” policies and has succeeded in alienating third-party developers.
With the new lawsuit, Epic Store argues that Google should allow third-party stores on the Play Store for free. In this context, it wants full access to update Play Store policies. It also demands that Google separate its Android and Play Store operations.
If these claims are upheld, Google could be granted an injunction. This could radically change the Play Store model and pave the way for stores like the Epic Games Store.
